Acetaldehyde is a colorless liquid with a pungent, fruity odor. Its chemical formula is CH3CHO and its molecular weight is 44.054.
- Mixed fuels
- Artificial flavoring
- Silver plating a mirror
- Production of pigments, perfumes and medicines
Main applications
Acetaldehyde is a key product in the manufacture of various chemical products, used as a raw material for the production of acetic anhydride, acetic acid, n-butyl acetate, pentaerythritol, and acetate esters. The main use of acetaldehyde is in the production of acetic acid and acetate esters.

Health hazards: Causes eye irritation and can cause severe eye burns. The permissible vapor threshold is 200PPM and protective goggles and gas masks should be used when exposed to it. In case of contact with the body, the contact area should be washed with water.
Fire extinguishing method: Acetaldehyde is soluble in water in any proportion and accordingly it can be diluted with water flow to prevent ignition. To extinguish the fire, water can be used in the form of spray, carbon dioxide extinguisher, powder or alcohol foam. Eye protection systems and respiratory protection devices should be used during operation.
Storage and transportation method:
It is stored and transported in one-liter pressure-resistant glass bottles and 5-55-gallon metal drums, special tank cars. These tanks should be kept away from physical damage and in a cool place. Large quantities should be stored in tanks that are in open environments and separated from other materials. These tanks should be cooled and the empty space inside them should be filled with an inert gas such as nitrogen.
Small containers for storage should be stored separately from other materials in fire-resistant buildings equipped with cooling systems and away from sources of ignition and alkalis, alcohols, columns, phenols, anhydrides, acids and oxidizing materials. Containers and places for storing acetaldehyde should prevent light from reaching this material.
The acetaldehyde storage warehouse should be built in accordance with the special conditions for places for storing flammable liquids.
