Formalin

Formaldehyde is a gas with a pungent odor. It is the simplest member of the aldehyde group. It is readily produced by the incomplete combustion of carbon-containing compounds. Although formaldehyde is a gas at room temperature, it is highly soluble in water. Formaldehyde is usually supplied as a 37% aqueous solution called formalin.

Formaldehyde is flammable and can cause sensitization if it comes into contact with the body. It is toxic if swallowed or in contact with the skin and can cause serious eye damage if it comes into contact with the eyes. When working with formaldehyde, there should be adequate ventilation, gloves and safety glasses should be worn. If formaldehyde is stored for a long time, paraformaldehyde is produced.
